Black Friday - Update #1

Hi All,

It is most magical time of the shopping year.  Black Friday and Cyber Monday.  To get you primed for Black Friday here are two sites to check out.

http://bfads.net/

http://www.black-friday.net/

If you do not want to be a crazy person and get up at 2 in the morning to wait in line in 21 degree temperatures let me give you a two secrets.
  1. Most of the sales start on-line at midnight.  It is much easier to stay up late then wait in line.  This usually does not apply to doorbusters, but unless you want to wait overnight, you will not get those anyway.
  2. Many stores will price match on Black Friday.  So lets say you wanted a TV that will be on sale on Friday, but you do not want to wait in line.  If they stock the TV regularly, not a guarantee with BF sales, you can buy it before Thursday then go back in at the tail end of the doorbuster time frame and do a price match.  This is very hit and miss, but most stores will do it.  If you really wanted to ensure this works and the store is being jerks about it you just return it during the time frame and have someone else come with you and they can buy it after you return it.  Given this is a pain in the butt, but so is waiting 6 hours in line.
Good luck on your sales.

Gone but not forgotten

Hello All,

I cannot celebrate the PlayStation without mourning the loss of the Dreamcast.  The Dreamcast debuted on 9/9/99, four years after the PS1 hit the US.  It was the finest system at the time, arguably the best system launch, and was killed due to Sega's bad decision making, EA not supporting it, and finally the PS2.

There is a video podcast series in iTunes that goes through the history of gaming, and is very entertaining.  Here is the episode on the Dreamcast.  If you have iTunes I recommend finding the series in their as the video quality is better.

If you missed out on the awesomeness that is the Dreamcast, you can still buy them from Amazon.  Lastly it is true that I bought a Dreamcast, then bought a second unit when they were on sale for $40, just in case the first one broke.  That is my love for the Dreamcast.

RIP Dreamcast

Hello All,

Sony has been selling PlayStation in America for fifteen years.  Wow, does that make me feel old.  Anyway, to celebrate they are offering free stuff and discounted stuff in their store, available to PS3 owners.  Here is Sonys post on the topic.

So far the special includes a neat theme, Super Rub a Dub, a Super Monkey Ball Deluxe style of game, for $2.99 and Suikoden, a PS1 RPG, for $2.99.

The sales and specials run through the end of the month.

For a background in how the PS1 came to be, check out this video.  The Bad move for Nintendo, good move for video gamers.

A quick one for you this morning.  Woot is selling an Epson networked all-in-one printer for $59.99 shipped to your door.  If you need a printer you should buy this one.  Here is why

  • Super fast - 38 Pages per minute

  • It is over $190 brand new - find it here
  • It scans, it faxes, it copies, and it prints

Deal of the Day - 8/29/10

Hello All,

Woot is selling 10.1" netbooks with Windows 7 for $204.99 shipped to your door.  These are refurbished models and there are five different netbooks to choose from.  This is not a shockingly good deal, but it is a solid deal.

I would pick the Gateway from this group as it has the best processor and chipset combination, it is the only one that is 64-bit and that is a big deal, and it has a largish battery.

You can find them all here, the Gateway is the last model in the listing.

If you want to compare to what I would suggest new, you can find that model here.  The Toshiba NB255-N245.  It is $280 at Amazon and is a very solid little machine.

Deal of the Day - 8/27/10

Hello All,

Two deals actually today.  If you need a TV, today is your lucky day.  Woot and Sellout.woot are selling refurbished Philips HDTVs for today only.

At woot you can find a 32" HDTV.  The TV has 3 HDMI jacks and a VGA jack so you can use it as a computer monitor.  The only slight against it is that it does not have a QAM tuner, so if you have cable you will need a box to get your HD channels on it.  It does have a over the air HD tuner, for hooking up an antenna, but it will not pull in the digital channels.  It is $304.99 shipped to your door, a great price for a bedroom TV or a TV used a computer monitor.  You can find it here.

At sellout.woot you will find a 42" HDTV.  This TV also has 3 HDMI jacks, and it will play music and pictures from USB drives. It has a QAM tuner, but does not have a VGA input.  This TV is $504.99 shipped to your door and would be a great TV for your living room.  You can find it here.

Hello All,

Awesome date today.  Two quick deals from Woot.

A refurbished Cuisinart Bread Maker for $49.99 shipped to your door.  You can find it here.

A Kodak digital camera for $44.99 shipped to your door.  You can find it here.

I would pick up the bread maker.  We have one and it works great.  We paid $100 for ours and it was worth it.  Fresh bread makes the house smell great and it only takes about five minutes of work, then you walk away and let the machine do its thing.

The camera would be great for a child, you can see a similar post on a similar camera here.

Deal of the Day - 7/7/10

Hello All,

Here is a nice and quick one for a Wednesday.  Woot is selling a refurbished Kodak 12MP digital camera for $54.99 shipped to your door.  It has a nice feature set

  • 5x Optical Zoom
  • Face Detection
  • Video Capture
  • 2.7" LCD
  • It uses AA batteries
Here is the product website at Kodak.  The last feature is nice to some, as you can get batteries everywhere, but I prefer a dedicated rechargeable.  I see the merits of AA, but I like a battery that was designed for the camera and lasts longer.  For $50 this would be a great bar camera or a first camera for a youngster.

You can find this camera here.

Deal of the Day - 6/28/10

Hello All,

Another great deal on a large LCD monitor.  Woot is selling a refurbished HP 23" LCD monitor for $145 shipped to your door.

The only caveat that I see with this monitor is that for the best picture, and for most people, you need to buy a dvi to hdmi adapter.  Monoprice sells them for $5.  You can find that here.  On the plus side, you can use this monitor as a TV.  It would be awesome in a car on a road trip.

You can find this deal here.

Sellout.woot is selling a refurbished 8GB iPod Nano for $94.99 shipped to your door.  You can find that deal here.  For just a touch more you can get an Apple certified iPod Shuffle for $99.99 plus taxes.  The advantage this Nano has is that it has a one year warranty, versus a 90 day warranty.  You can find this deal here.

Both are good deals.  For the money I would pay $5 for nine more months of warranty.

Hi All,

It has been a long time, but things seem to be getting back to normal.  There should be more posts going forward.

Costco has a nice deal on an Olympus DSLR.  Now most of you probably don't care, but you should.  First off it is small, not like most DSLRs.  Second off it is inexpensive, $499 with a lens, and a memory card.  Third off it shoots 720p HD movies.  Fourth off it uses the new micro 4/3 standard.  Both Olympus and Panasonic are on board, likely Sigma, Tanaka, and other lens makers will be on board soon as they will not have to make the same lens in different flavors for all of the manufactures.  All of this combines to make a nice camera.

You can find the deal here.

It is not all roses and rainbows, but for the money it is really solid and is a great value.

You can see a more detailed review here.

I am a big fan of the Canon G11, and for a little bit more this is a much better camera.

Deal of the Day #3 - 3/5/10

Hello All,

Microsoft is offering a nice deal to people who played Halo 2 on Xbox Live.  Here is a copy of the message Microsoft sends to some users.

On April 15, 2010, we will discontinue the Xbox LIVE service for original Xbox games playable on Xbox v1 and Xbox 360. In our continuing efforts to evolve the service, we need to make changes to the LIVE service that are not compatible with original Xbox v1 games.

What does this change mean for you?
• It does not affect your ability to play original Xbox v1 games offline, but does remove LIVE connectivity and support for online multiplayer, leader boards, and other online features of these games.
• We realize that you are an avid Halo 2 fan. Unfortunately, with this change, you will not be able to play Halo 2 on Xbox LIVE going forward.
• Although it is difficult to say goodbye to Halo 2, the Halo franchise continues as the benchmark for multiplayer gaming in this generation with Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, and soon Halo: Reach. On the Xbox 360, you will continue to have access to the LIVE service where you can enjoy hundreds of other LIVE-enabled games.

When will this change take effect?
• April 15, 2010.

What is Xbox LIVE doing for me?
• To thank you for being a loyal Xbox LIVE customer, we are giving you a free, three-month LIVE Gold membership and 400 Microsoft Points for you to use as you choose on Xbox LIVE.
• In addition, because you've been so loyal to Halo, we are inviting you to participate in the exclusive Halo: Reach Beta.

How do I get these offers?
• You will receive a token for 400 MS points. Check your Xbox LIVE account messages on the console. These points can be used for 365 days after you activate your token.
• We are extending your Gold membership by three months automatically. The extension will be directly reflected in your LIVE account.
• Finally, as the beta gets closer, you will receive an e-mail containing the code granting you access to the exclusive Halo: Reach Beta.

Thank you for being a loyal Xbox LIVE member. Please visit xbox.com/support if you have any questions or for more information.

Hi All,

They are giving away LCD TVs these days.  Literally giving them away.
I would buy the last one if I were in the market, that one is the best by the numbers of the bunch.  The interface on the LGs is very good and easy to use for non-technical people.  I would buy one of them for my parents.

Lastly, the 42" LG's price fluctuated yesterday.  Sometimes it was 550 sometimes it was 650.  If you do not get the 550 just try again.

Hi All,

One more for this morning, also from Newegg.  They are selling a 47" LG LCD for $999.99 plus $30 shipping.  This by itself is decent.  The TV is 120Hz if you believe that hype and LG is a good second tier TV maker.  The kicker, the reason you might want this tv is because it is wireless.

Yes that is right, wireless.

You can mount this on the wall with just a power cord.  It has a media hub that you plug everything into and can beam the signals up to 30 feet away.  Pretty cool stuff.

RedBox Codes

Hi All,

I found this website, http://www.insideredbox.com/redbox-codes/, that has free RedBox rental codes.  I tried the DVDATWAG last night and it worked perfectly.

If you want a RedBox movie and do not want to pay $1, you should check out the site.

Deal of the Day - 1/15/10

Hello All,

Woot is selling the Sansa Clip 2GB Mp3 player for $17.99 shipped to your door.  This is a great price on a mp3 player that is perfect for working out, skiing, or just running around.  It has an FM Radio, and the ability to record FM radio.  They are also very durable, and cheap enough to not really care if something happens to them.

You can find this deal here.

Deal of the Day #2 - 1/8/10

Hi Again All,

One more deal for all of you, after I finished reading my inbox.  RedBox is offering a free rental due to the issues with supply and demand over the New Year.

Use code

RBX2NITE

To get a free rental.  The email came in last night at 6pm and it says it expired last night, but that would be the worst customer service ever, so lets assume they messed up the dates.

Deal of the Day - 1/8/10

Hello All,

Another quick one for today and today only.  Sellout.woot is selling refurbished 47" Vizio LCD tvs for $654.99 shipped to your door.  I am not a Vizio guy at all, but 47" for $654 is tough to argue with.  The TV is 1080p, has 4 HDMI slots, and comes with all of the tuners you want (QAM, ATSC, NTSC).

For a comparison in price, Amazon is selling the newest version of this TV for $999.

The TV market is radically changing right now with 3D tvs rolling out this year, LED powered TVs dropping in price and  OLED right around the corner.  I would suggest not breaking the bank right now as much better TVs will be very affordable, very soon.

Find it here.

Deal of the Day - 1/6/10

Hi All,

Just a quick one for Xbox 360 users.  Amazon is selling a 12 month Xbox live membership card for $34.99.  The regular price for this card is $50.00 and I believe the automatic payment system is crazy expensive at $60 a year.

You can find this deal here.
