Deal of the Day #3 - 12/29/09

Hello All,

There are a lot of video game deals this week, so I will just throw them together in one big post.  This is that post.

GameFly is having their year end sale, which means lots of games for cheap, with free shipping.  You can find them all here.  The inventory changes pretty quick so I am not going to post stuff that is gone by the time you read this.

Here is a posting for an Amazon discount finder for the different game systems.  This is not for a game, this is for any game currently being sold for 20% off on the PS3 platform, for example.  Find this here.

Xbox360 Games
Forza 3 - $39.98 - Amazon
Call of Duty: MW2 - $39.99 - Amazon
Assassin's Creed II - $39.99 - Amazon
Left 4 Dead 2 - $39.99 - Amazon
Dragon Age: Origins - $39.99 - Amazon
Xbox Live 12- Month Card with free ticket to Sherlock Holmes - $39.99 - Best Buy

PS3
Assassin's Creed II - $39.99 - Amazon
Dragon Age: Origins - $39.99 - Amazon

Wii
New Super Mario Brothers - $39.99 - Best Buy and Amazon
Wii Sports Resort with Motion Plus - $39.99 - Amazon and Target (Note: Choose Amazon for the seller, the default seller is higher cost.)

Deal of the Day - 12/21/09

Hello All,

I am not going to say there has been a drought of deals lately, but there has not been much post worthy.

Best Buy is selling Metroid Prime Trilogy for the Wii for $19.99.  Amazon is selling it for 33.49, and the regular price is $40.00, so it is a sweet deal for all of the Wii owners out there.

You can find it here.

Black Friday Advice

Hello All,

First things first.

  1. Check this site to plan out your shopping.  They have almost all of the ads and they are searchable.  Reading every ad on Thanksgiving is not an efficient use of your time.

  2. Black Friday is a gimmick.  There may be other good deals at a store on a certain day, but be prepared and know before you stray from the reason you went in.  When the Garmin for $90 is sold out at 7:01 do not just throw down $300 for the other one they have left in stock.  Go back home, check Amazon or whatever and order it online.  Remember it is worse to be suckered into an overpriced item than it is to go home empty handed.

  3. Check online.  I am going to put that again, for emphasis.

  4. Check online.  Amazon, Buy.com, and many online versions of brick and mortar stores have Black Friday deals as well.  You can shop in your robe and never deal with the insanity that is Black Friday in person.  I cannot emphasize this enough.  Free shipping and your own house is better than waiting hours in line for disappointment.

  5. If you must have the gift today or the item you want is not one of the door busters, ie several hundred dollars off, just wait until 10 am or so.  You can often get a late start and not deal with the 5 am insanity.  The people that get there for the store opens are up at 3 am and in line at 4 am.  By 10 am they are exhausted and back home, sleeping.  Most of the rest of people are scared to venture out at all, leaving the $10 copy of Grand Theft Auto IV for you at 10 am.  I have nabbed some sweet deals using this strategy and not waiting in line or gotten up way too early.
Hopefully everyone finds what they want and saves a bundle of cash.  Good luck.

John

Deal of the Day #3 - 11/25/09

Hello All,

Woot, one of my favorite sites, has started a deal site of their own.  They a hosting a forum to have people upload offers to their site.  If you are looking for something specific and I have not found it for you, this place is a good bet for you.  As a warning, there is a lot to wade through and it is socially driven, but it looks promising if you can deal with those two things.

Hello All,

Target has a great price on an Acer netbook. They are selling the Acer Aspire One 10.1" netbook in blue for $199. This is $90 off the usual price for this machine.

The only negatives for this machine are the small battery, so giving only around 4 hours of battery life, and it is an Acer. On the plus side it is very inexpensive. $200 for a new netbook is very inexpensive.

I am going to do something new today, that is post an iPhone app deal. Let me know what you think.

Konami is selling all of their apps for $0.99. I cannot find anywhere that states how long this deal will last, so act quickly if you want anything.

In quickly looking at the apps, Metal Gear is the top rated app with 4 stars. Most of the rest of the apps are 3 star apps.

Deal of the Day #5 - 11/17/09

Hello All,

I like Windows 7. I am not ashamed to say it. I am still a Mac user at home, but I have switched to Windows 7 at work. Honestly this is mainly due to one horrible program I need to use every day, and my old machine does not do virtual machines very well, but I still switched to 7, and am happy with it.

I will probably write more about this switch and Windows 7 later, but for now, if you want Windows 7, you can get it very cheap as long as you have an .edu email address. Mircosoft is selling Windows 7 for $29.99 as a download. This offer ends on 1/3/2010.

Laptop Reliability Ratings

Hello All,

-- Update --

Here is a PCMag article that mimics the findings of the Squaretrade data. As I said Consumer Reports shows similar data as well. That makes three separate sources that say HPs have the highest rate of failure.

Interesting article over on Gizmodo about laptop reliability. This mimics what Consumer Reports found as well, and what I have said all along. The short story, do not buy a Compaq or HP and Asus and Toshiba are some of the best.

Deal of the Day #4 - 11/17/09

Hello All,

Amazon is selling the Canon XSi, a 55-250 Lens, a 18-55 Lens, and a lens filter for $618.

The XSi deal from Amazon is the best by far. Best Buy has the same deal for only $900.

The only kicker to the deal is you have to buy all three things at the same time, and all from Amazon. You need to pick them in the sellers list. By default Amazon usually picks themselves as the seller, but sometimes there are cheaper sellers and it is not Amazon as the seller.

Here are all of the links to the parts for the deal.

Canon XSi Camera with kit lens

55-250 IS Lens

UV Filter

The camera and filter are sold by Amazon by default, you just need to choose Amazon from the list with the lens.

You can also do this with the T1i. I am not going to spell that all out though, as you should not buy that camera. HD Video DSLRs are not their yet. They cannot auto focus after you start recording. Unless you are going to record something that does not change its location from you and the camera, this is worthless.

Wait until the second generation, the T2i or whatever Canon will call it.

Deal of the Day - 11/4/09

Hello All,

Wal-Mart has two nice deals on Xbox360 related gear.

1. Starting Saturday, and probably not lasting long, they will be selling 360 Arcades for $199, with a $100 gift card.

2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will come out on the 10th. Wal-Mart is offering a $20 gift card with the purchase of the game.

I plan on picking up a 360 to use as a media extender with my Windows 7 machine at home, and I am pretty excited about it. If you want a 360 as a serious gaming device I do not think this is a stellar deal, as you can get a 360 Pro (it comes with a hard drive for game saves and quicker game load times), with a couple of games for $299, and some other similar deals are even cheaper. To get this one up to the Pro Level you would have to spend about $90 to get a hard drive, which although $10 cheaper, does not come with the two bundled games.

Just to reiterate, as a media extender this is perfect. If you want it for gaming it is not a great deal. If you are thinking of this, but do not have a Tuner, woot has you covered. That is a today only deal though.

Thanks to loyal reader Hans for the heads up on the Modern Warfare deal.

Happy Birthday Mom!

Hello All,

-- Update --

This was a pricing error. The corrected price is $299. Amazon is the cheapest place for the lens that is apparently, not a pricing error.

HH Gregg has a crazy deal on a Canon lens. They are selling the Canon 55-250 IS lens for $99.99 shipped to your door.

This is a great walk about lens, and general use lens. It is a bit much zoom for most indoor situations, but for any outdoor work, this is a great lens.

Hello All,

At a recent party there was a request to find cheap prices on a Dyson hand vac. For all you loyal JDOTD followers, here you go.

Dyson DC16

Two things about this model.

1. This is not the pink model that Val has, this is the boring yellow one. The pink one I knew of is sold out. You can find it here. You can sign up for a notice if they get it back in stock.

2. This is a quick use vacuum. The battery lasts for about five minutes. This is a big complaint about the model. If you know this, you will not be disappointed. I think it would be perfect for little messes around the house, but for some people they want more, at least that is the feeling I get from the reviews.

Deal of the Day - 10/9/09

Hello All,

It has been a slow time for deals, so I have not had much to post. If you like going to the movies, in the theater, this is a great deal. Star Cinema in Madison, along with other theaters in other cities, has a $5 club. When you sign up for the club you can go to a movie a couple weeks after it has been out for just $5. They send you a weekly email telling you the movie times and what movies are in the $5 range. It is a great deal as you can go to a movie at night, and pay matinée prices for it.

The only potential issue with this is that each person has to sign up for their own card. So if you are a mom, you need to get one for your kids and husband, you cannot just buy the tickets on your one card. Aside from that little gotcha, it is a great deal.

You can sign up here.

Apple 9/9/09 Event Wrap-up

Hello All,

Apple announced new iPod Nanos, iPod Touches, iPod shuffles, and iPod classics yesterday, along with new software for the iPhone, and new iTunes 9.

What does this mean and why am I writing about it? Excellent questions. This means that the old stock is getting cleaned out, and now is the best time to get the prior generation models for reduced prices.

Apple themselves have cut prices on the refurbished old models, you can find the details below:

  • 8GB - $99
  • 16GB - $129
Overall not a great deal, the new ones are only $149 for 16Gb and include a video camera and FM tuner. If you are looking for a basic and cheap iPod, maybe the 8GB is for you, but I would spring for the new ones myself.

  • 8GB - $149
  • 16GB - $199
  • 32GB - $249
These are kind of good deals. The new 8GB is the same as the old one, just with reduced price to $199, so you can save $50, or 25% by buying a refurbished model. The 16GB has been dropped from the new models all together, so if you want that size you have no choice but to get one now. The 32GB is not a steal at that price. The new 32 is only $299 and has double the processor speed of the last generation. This means nothing for mp3 playing, but for email, web browsing, video game playing, it means a lot.

  • 120GB - $199
This is a decent deal. The new models are 40GB bigger (160GB), but cost $249. If you need that space the new one is the way to go. If I took every mp3 I have it would not fill the 120GB so saving the money seems smart, as there are no new features on the classic.

  • 1GB - $39
  • 2Gb - $59
The new ones are $59 for 2GB and $79 for 4GB. The new ones are smaller, and have to be controlled by the ear buds. Depending on what you use it for, the old ones are probably a better deal, but if you just use it to run, or walk or whatever, get a new one.

I hope that helps you with your iPod buying, and there will be more to come.

Deal of the Day - 8/28/09

Hello All,

Microsoft has met Sony's price drop with a price drop of their own. The 360 has fallen in price just like the PS3 did before it. The new pricing is as follows.
  • The 360 Elite is now $299 down from $399
  • The 360 Pro is now $249 down from $299
  • The 360 Arcade did not change and remains $199
If you want one, Amazon has the best deals right now. If you buy the Elite you get a year of free Xbox Live service, and if you buy the Pro you get to choose a free copy of Halo 3, Fable II, or Halo Wars. The best deal, while supplies last, is this one though. The 360 Elite, with Halo 3 and Fable II for $299.

Xbox Live is advertised as $50 a year, but you can find it for around $30 most of the time. The two games with the last bundle are worth about $80 together, making it a better deal. They have also removed the free HDMI cables with the newer bundles and it is still included in the Halo 3 - Fable II edition, saving you about $10 more dollars.

Now the dilemma. The PS3, Xbox360 and Wii can all be had for under $300. The Wii for me is still the least desirable of all three, and for me has been used the least. The wife last night commented about it being a waste of our money. I do not think that, but it gets the least amount of usage of all three systems in our house. Although I love the 360 and have played more games on it than the other two consoles combined, the PS3 is the best value. It does more outside of playing games (Blu-ray player, Internet Browser, Picture Viewer, it supports almost every audio and video codex out there), and on top of that the controller is wireless and includes rechargeable batteries in it. The 360 is the better game console, but there is more to the race then the game aspect, and Sony is starting to catch up to the 360 on the game front. The 360 needs to either drop in price again, or add more features to compete at the $299 price point.

I think the first one to have a DVR add-on will really dominate the market. The PS3 already is selling one in Europe, how long before they sell one here.

The tubes were right!!!

Hello All,

The PS3 slim is coming out in September and it will be $299. The old ones are now $299, but they have smaller hard drives, 80 vs 120, and are bigger. I would wait to see what deals Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and the rest will have for the old PS3s before making a decision as to which model to get.

I have said it before, and I will say it again. The PS3 is the best media hub out there. I use it at least as much for entertainment as I do for games, if not more for entertainment. Here are some of the reasons I strongly recommend it:
  1. It is the best Blu-Ray player on the market - It has frequent free updates, and is BD-Live compatible
  2. It up-converts dvds, divx, and almost anything else you throw at it
  3. You can hook your camera up too it and pull your pictures down to it
  4. You can rip Cds to it
  5. You can copy MP3s and AACs to it

Deal of the Day #2 - 8/17/09

Hello All,

If you are in the market for a netbook because you want something cheap, you should get this. Best Buy is selling a 15" Acer with 2Gb of ram and a 64-bit processor for $279.99. This is cheaper then a Dell Mini10 and it is a full powered machine.

You will give up battery life and weight over a netbook, but it is a full powered machine, and it has a DVD drive.

Rumors for August

Hello All,

Looking back at my blog I see that my rumor postings have been, well, less than accurate. So take these with a grain of salt. I will put the rumors in highest likelihood to lowest.

  1. New iPods will be hitting the market around September 7th.
There is an Apple Event this day, so something will be coming out, and I doubt it will just be iTunes 9.
  2. Snow Leopard will be coming out early, possibly the last week in August.
It is a significant upgrade from Leopard, if you can you should get it.
  3. The Sony PS3 price drop will finally be coming in September.
The tubes are saying $300 for the unit, and possibly a slimmer version as well. I think the price drop will happen, probably not the slimmer, unfortunately.
There you have all of the tech rumors I know. Keep these in mind if you are close to buying one of the items listed, as the old models will price drop when the new ones hit, or you might get more bang for your buck if you wait a little bit.

Hello All,

Woot is again selling an EEEPC, but this time it is brand spanking new, and it is cheaper than before. Woot is selling the 900, with 1GB of ram, and a 4GB solid state drive, for 169.99. Use coupon code ONEBAG for free shipping.

I like the EEEPC, but the keyboard is too small for me. If I were to get a netbook I would get a Dell Mini9 or Mini10. If you are in the market but do not think the EEEPC is for you, wait a bit. The Mini9 goes on sale fairly regularly, and the Mini10 is due for a sale soon.

Hello All,

Newegg has a couple TomTom gps units for cheap cheap prices. They have a refurbished 4.3" TomTom One XL for $88.00, a TomTom One without text-to-speech for $69.00 and one with text-to-speech for $87.99. The last two have rebates making them even cheaper, but most people forget to fill those out so I am not including those in the prices.

The One XL is the best deal. It has text-to-speech (it says the street names, a great feature), bluetooth, and a large screen. The other two are good deals as well, depending on your needs. I do not like the turn in 500ft models myself, I like the turn on main st, but both work.

Find the XL here.

Find the non text-to-speech one here.

Find the text-to-speech model here.

Lastly, I am a Garmin man. They make the best GPS's out there. If you plan on using the GPS a lot they are worth the extra money. But if you are not after something you will use a lot, the TomTom is fine. Someone has to be second place :-).

One more bonus thing, both the TomTom and Garmin allow you to plan your routes on Mapquest and then upload the route to the GPS. This is great as a keyboard and mouse beats a touchscreen any day of the week.

Deal of the Day #4 - 8/5/09

Hello All,

Newegg is selling a Samsung Laser Printer for $44.00, with free shipping.

Use code EMCLWLR32 (Exp. 8/10).

Find this deal here.

By itself this is a great deal on a decent printer. If you really want to increase your awesomeness and the usefulness of the printer, you need to add this too it. A network print server. This allows you to hook the printer into your network and print to it from any computer at anytime. This is great for laptops, which we use almost exclusively at our house, then you do not have to move files around, or hook up the printer to the laptop, or anything. It is really great.

I personally use this print server, and it works well for me. It is easy to set-up and works all of the time. It is a bit old now though, so I am sure something better has come along. If I were buying today I would get this one, as it has parallel and usb, and you can hook up a couple of printers to it, ie the laser and a color, or whatever.

The two last things about using a printer server are you can move the printer virtually anywhere you want - in other words you can hide it - the wife loves this. Lastly, you do not need to leave a computer on all of the time for printer sharing. You will save the cost of the print server in a few months worth of use, compared to the costs for keeping a computer on and running 24/7.

Hello All,

Video Game deals for the PS3 and Xbox360.

PSN - the built-in PS3 store is selling the following games from 7/16 - 7/23.
  • 3 on 3 NHL Arcade - $4.99
  • Brain Challenge - $4.99
  • Crash Commando - $4.99
  • Flock - $7.49
  • PixelJunk Eden - $4.99
  • Savage Moon - $4.99
  • Wipeout HD - $14.99
I have Savage Moon, it is a good tower defense game. Flock looks good, but I do not have it. Wipeout was one of the best games initially to hit the PS3, but I think it is only $5 off, not much of a sale.

Hello All,

Apple released updated laptops about two weeks ago, and consequently the old ones came down in price. If you do not need the speed increases or the sd card reader built in, you can get a great deal on a new, but last generation laptop.

Hello All,

Yesterday the Kindle 2's price fell from $359 to $299, a big drop and a step toward making the kindle a purchase for a wider audience. The biggest advantages of the kindle over other ebook readers is that it has free wifi anywhere in the world and you can buy new best selling books for $10. I am not much of a book reader, ADHD makes it hard to focus and all :-), but this is pretty attractive even to me. The iPhone does enough of this for me personally so I will not jump yet, but I think the kindle is the next iPod. For a while iPods were really expensive and not very big, now almost everyone has one and they are very inexpensive. You are actually weirder to not have an iPod these days than you are if you do. That point will come in a few years for the kindle.

You can find the kindle here.

Woot has two netbook deals today. At the main woot site they are selling a 10.1" Acer Aspire One netbook for 264.99 shipped to your door. This is not a great deal, as you can get a brand new one shipped to your door from buy.com for about $50 more. I guess it is $50 though, tough call.

Woot here

Buy here

The sister site sellout.woot is selling an Asus EEEPC for 174.99 shipped to your door. This is a brand new netbook which is a plus but it is only a 8.9" lcd which is a minus. Overall this one is slightly less appealing to me, but I do not see the appeal of a tiny screen anyway unless it is for your kids or something.

You can find this deal here.

As an adult I would buy the Dell Mini 10. I would buy this because you can install Mac OS X on it very easily, albeit questionable legally. I prefer my full sized laptop though, and do not think it is worth it to get something that small. Different strokes for different folks though.

Seriously it is a great movie, and everyone should have a copy or two, one low-def, one high-def, if you are me.

If you are me, let me know. You are really slacking on the deal posts as of late. You really start needing to pull your weight me.

iPhone Updates

Hello All,

Today was the first day of the Apple World Wide Developer Connection (WWDC) and there was a lot of news. There are all new laptops, a new operating system, and a new version of the Safari browser. This dear readers is all good news, but not the big news. The big news is two fold.
  1. There is a new version of the iPhone operating system, 3.0, that is coming out on June 17th.
  2. There is a new iPhone, the 3GS, coming out on June 19th.
Here is a quick rundown of the two biggest announcements.

The iPhone 3.0 operating system
  • It is a free update for all iPhone users and $9.95 for all iPod Touch users
  • Improved Safari web browser
  • Copy and Paste
  • Landscape mode in email, text, and notes
  • Complete iPhone search
  • Voice Memos
  • Improved calendar app
You can find all the updates here.

The iPhone 3GS Update
  • Same size and shape as the 3G phone
  • Faster processor 2x or more, depending on the application
  • Improved camera, 3 mega pixel, with video
  • Faster 3G network support
  • New 3D video support
  • Improved battery life
  • Voice control for many applications
The 8GB 3G is now $99, the 16GB 3G is $149. The new 3GS will come in 16GB and 32GB at $199 and $299.

The only bad news involves AT&T. If you are like me and got your 3G iPhone when they first came out last year, you will have to wait until December or so to get the upgrade prices. If you cannot wait that long you will have to pay an $18 upgrade fee and either $399 or $499, depending on the size of the phone you want. This is better than people with recent new contracts. They will be hit for $599 and $699, depending on the phone size.

Overall I am pretty excited about the new phone, but I am disappointed there is not a better upgrade path. If you can wait 6 months why would you not wait 6 more and see what Apple comes out with in June of 2010. AT&T would be better served to keep people like me on the hook for another two years then allow me to wait and see. This will without question piss off a lot of their customers, and that is not good for business. I am half way through my contract, why not lock me in for another two years. A lot can happen in a year with regard to technology. There could be a better phone out than the iPhone in another year, or at least close to as good and AT&Ts service leaves room for improvement. So maybe people wait for their contract to end and then they leave. That is a risk AT&T runs with this strategy. I know I switched solely for the iPhone, I would switch away if there were a better phone out there.

John

Deal of the Day - 6/3/09

Hello All,

The Nikon D40 has dropped in price and is now almost cheap. Amazon is currently selling the D40 for $412 shipped to your door.

This camera is an entry level DSLR and has been highly rated by many, many, many, many places.

Personally I would buy a Canon, the XSi, but that is a lot more money. If I were being cost conscious I would buy the Sony A200K. It has a longer zoom lens and image stabilization in the body. My neighbor has this camera and really likes it. He says the manual is very detailed and teaches you about shooting. The Sony is $499 shipped to your door, you can find it here.

There is nothing at all wrong with the Nikon, I am just not a big fan of Nikon personally. They make arguably the best cameras in the world, I just think they charge too much for them.

You can find the D40 here.

One final recommendation, if you buy a DSLR get the Magic Lantern Guide for your camera. They simplify all of the features and really teach you how to get the most out of your camera. I like Amazon for books myself, but Borders and Barnes and Noble sell them in the store if you want it now.
